A NEW GUNN HISTORY BOOK

This text provides a radical, academically based view of Gunn history.

It is the first Gunn history in over fifty years, the first to use the Sutherland Estate Papers in the National Library of Scotland and the first to use the National Records of Scotland. It rejects vast swathes of the myths which currently masquerade as 'Clan Gunn' history.

Gunns are best thought of as the original, non-related inhabitants of northern mainland Scotland. They do not have an Orkney Islands origin.

Gunns should not be viewed as a clan as they had no founding ancestor. There was never an historic 'Clan Gunn Chief'. The Gunn name is best viewed as a regional / area name.

The first Gunn known to history was Coroner Gunn of Caithness who died around 1450. His eldest son started the MacHamish Gunns of Killernan line. The front cover of the book shows Alexander Gunn of Badenloch (the senior MacHamish at one time) and his sister Margaret. She married John Gunn 'of' KInbrace who also descended from the Coroner. This front image is discussed in detail inside the book, especially on page 82.

Many MacHamish Gunns of Killernan exist all around the world, including from Margaret and John Gunn 'of' Kinbrace. The author is one of them.

This book is an important addition to Scottish Highland history.

It is 242 US letter size pages and comes in hardback and paperback.
